Cyber Savvy Inbox Attendees Stumped by Phishing Emails
MailFrontier Phishing IQ Test II Puts Email Technology Leaders on the Spot

Palo Alto, Calif. – November 22, 2004 – MailFrontier™, a pioneer in email security and leading provider of anti-spam and anti-phishing solutions, and the Golden Group, today announced final results of the MailFrontier Phishing IQ Test II launched at INBOX East last week. Conference attendees were put to the challenge to see if they could better the standing national average of correctly identifying 66 percent of the test emails as legitimate or fraudulent.   The technology leaders rose to the challenge posting an average score of 72 percent while at the show and surpassed the national average in several areas:

  • 10 percent of the INBOX respondents had a perfect score, identifying all ten of the test emails correctly, compared to a perfect score for 5 percent of the general population of respondents to date.
  • INBOX respondents were better at identifying phishing emails as fraudulent, averaging 81 percent accuracy versus the average of 77 percent for the general population of respondents to date.
  • INBOX respondents also were better at identifying the legitimate emails in the test, scoring an average of 61 percent compared to 54 percent for the general population of respondents to date.

However, responding to just one phishing email can have devastating financial and personal repercussions and there remains a need for public education -- even among the cyber savvy.

Phishing is the most common type of fraudulent email today, and the threat has grown beyond a consumer issue to an issue businesses must address. In the three months since the initial release of the MailFrontier Phishing IQ test, phishing email attacks have risen 50 percent each month, according to MailFrontier Research™.

MailFrontier encourages email users to test their expertise and see if they can better the running average by taking the Phishing IQ II test at http://survey.mailfrontier.com/survey/quiztest.html.
