Email Fraudsters
Make It Harder for Corporations to Alert Their Customers About Phisher
Scams
MailFrontier Uncovers
New Email Fraud Technique
Palo Alto, Calif., January
21, 2004 – MailFrontier, a pioneer in messaging security and
leading provider of anti-spam solutions, is alerting corporations of a
new phishing technique that will make it difficult for spoofed companies
to warn customers about email fraud.
As with many phishing scams, this email asks the recipient to click on
a link taking them to a web page requesting a wide range of personal information.
The gathered information is most likely used for credit card fraud and
identity theft. In previous cases of email fraud, the spoofed corporations
have captured the fraudulent site in a screen shot and used it to warn
their customers of the scam.
However, fraudulent emails continue to become more sophisticated and the
newest technique, discovered by MailFrontier, restricts company’s
ability to capture these screen shots. The fraudsters use sophisticated
programming techniques to disable copy and paste functionality, which
in turn disables the print screen feature. Fraudulent email scams are
now more likely to succeed, allowing them to prolong the fraud’s
lifetime and endanger more email users.
