The challenge/response capability is part of MailFrontier
Desktop, but this option is off by default. You can activate
the challenge/response option by moving the slider shown in the
picture below from “Off” to either “Low” or “High”. These
settings are discussed below.
How Challenge/Response works
The basic premise of a challenge/response
system is to challenge email from people you don’t know and see if they respond. If
someone responds, they are most likely a legitimate sender. Spammers
on the other hand, will not respond as they often use fake or stolen
email addresses. When you challenge an incoming email, that email is placed in
the “MailFrontier Challenged Mail” folder where it
remains until you receive a response or it is deleted based on
your settings (typically 180 days).
A challenge can be graphical or textual, but always requires that
the receiver respond with an answer to a question, for example “How
many kittens are in this picture?”. This way an automated
response to a challenge is not possible – it requires a real
person.
The High Challenge setting
The high challenge setting will
challenge all email you receive unless a given email message is
from a sender who gets a “free
pass”. You can provide the free pass because the sender
is on one of your Allowed list or MailFrontier can provide the
free pass because we have absolutely determined that the sender
is legitimate.
The Low Challenge setting
The low challenge setting will
challenge only those email messages that MailFrontier Desktop can
not determine with certainty are good or bad. This is typically
a very small percentage of your email.
